What is Neuro-linguistic Programming or NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that explores the relationships between language, behaviour and thought patterns. It involves a set of techniques and principles aimed at understanding and changing the way people think, learn, and communicate. NLP encompasses various tools for personal development, communication enhancement, and overcoming mental challenges. The goal is often to identify and modify patterns of behaviour to achieve specific outcomes and improve overall well-being.

NLP looks at the way in which we think and process our thoughts in our minds (Neuro), the language patterns we use (Linguistic) and our subsequent behaviour (Programming) and how these all interact to have a positive (or negative) effect on us as individuals. The co-founders, Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder, believed that NLP would be useful in ‘finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives’.

An NLP practitioner like Jane uses a wide range of methods and models to bring about a positive change in a client’s life, increase self-awareness, improve communication and change outmoded patterns of behaviour. It is not a rigid system that people have to be fitted into though, it is more like a toolbox of life skills and every client is treated as an individual. This is one of the reasons why this relatively young discipline has grown so fast in popularity and is often referred to as the ‘instruction manual for the mind’.
