Imagine feeling cool, calm and back in control…

Why use Integrated Therapy & Hypnosis to break a habit?

Whether you’ve got an embarrassing habit such as nail biting, skin picking or hair pulling, or an addiction to shopping, gambling, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes or recreational drugs. Hypnotherapy for bad habits can help you to address the root of the problem, change the way you think and ultimately allow you to break free from the mental chains that keep you addicted. A bad habit or addiction is simply an automatic way of responding to a given stimulus or trigger. Although consciously we might know that a negative action like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption is bad for us, we keep doing it because on a subconscious level it gives a perceived feeling of relief from our negative emotion – be that stress, anxiety, agitation or boredom etc.

What is a Habit? How would you Define a Habit?

A habit is a routine behavior or action that is regularly repeated, often unconsciously, in response to certain cues or triggers. Habits are typically acquired through repetition and reinforcement, and they can become automatic over time. Nearly 50% of our daily behaviour is often performed out of habit and sometimes this can be really helpful.

Good self-care and good health and wellness habits, for example, can be very beneficial to help us live a balanced life. Day to day, we don’t mind forming good behaviours, such as brushing our teeth, going to the gym or walking the dog. In fact, this kind of habitual behaviour often gives us structure and routine in our day and lets us function smoothly and efficiently.

It also helps free up cognitive space for the conscious mind which only has a limited mental capacity to focus on these kind of repetitive activities. The unconscious mind, on the other hand, can automatically process repetitive habits using very little energy or effort. This is why it’s actually human nature to follow the Law of Least Effort because energy is precious, and the brain is wired to conserve energy, it makes perfect sense for the unconscious mind to deal with our habitual behaviour instead.

It’s just when an unhealthy self-destructive action like smoking or drinking starts that habitual behaviour can sometimes become problematic. Smoking can all too easily become a daily ritual. It may be an automatic response for someone, for example,  to smoke a cigarette with morning coffee, while taking a break from work, or to wind down at the end of the day.

As habits are created, the level of activity in the brain actually decreases and our mind automatically starts searching for the easiest and most familiar old behaviour. That’s why whenever we get the craving, we are simply following that old thought pattern or that old neural pathway in our head

Neural Pathways & Habits

Neural pathways play a crucial role in forming habits. When a behavior is repeated consistently over time, neural pathways in the brain become strengthened and more efficient at transmitting signals related to that behavior. This process, known as neuroplasticity, involves the strengthening of connections between neurons, making it easier for the brain to activate the same behavior in response to specific cues or triggers.

As habits become more ingrained, neural pathways associated with the habit are reinforced, leading to automaticity – the tendency for the behavior to occur with minimal conscious effort or awareness. This is why habits can be difficult to break; the neural pathways associated with the habit have been deeply established through repetition, making the behavior more resistant to change.

However, with intentional effort and interventions such as hypnosis, it’s possible to modify existing neural pathways and create new ones that support healthier behaviors, ultimately leading to the formation of new habits.

Habits, Hypnosis and the Subconscious Mind

A bad habit or addiction is simply an automatic way of responding to a given stimulus or trigger. Although consciously we might know that a negative action like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption is bad for us, we keep doing it because on a subconscious level it gives a perceived feeling of relief from our negative emotion – be that stress, anxiety, agitation or boredom etc. When certain repetitive behaviour makes us feel uncomfortable, lacking in control, or has the potential to cause negative consequences we often realise it is time to change but what the subconscious has dutifully learned by repetition and association over time, often doesn’t respond immediately to a conscious decision to stop. The subconscious learns well. Too well sometimes! And it is programmed to remember our instructions regardless of whether it’s a good or a bad habit.

Can Hypnotherapy Help with Bad Habits?

YES! Integrative Therapy and Hypnosis can help some individuals break old habits and change their behaviour. Here are some of the ways it can help…

1. Identifying Triggers: Hypnosis can uncover the underlying triggers or cues that prompt the bad habit, helping individuals become more aware of the situations or emotions that lead to its enactment.

2. Changing Patterns: Hypnosis can facilitate the rewiring of neural pathways associated with the habit, allowing individuals to replace it with healthier behaviors or responses.

3. Increasing Motivation & Willpower: Hypnosis can can boost motivation and strengthen self-control and willpower, empowering individuals to resist the urge to engage in the bad habit when confronted with triggers.

4. Creating Positive Associations: Hypnosis can help individuals associate negative consequences with the bad habit and positive rewards with abstaining from it, making it easier to break the habit over time.

5. Addressing Underlying Issues: Hypnosis can explore and address any underlying psychological or emotional issues that contribute to the development or maintenance of the bad habit, promoting long-lasting change.

6. Building Confidence: Hypnosis can boost confidence and self-belief, empowering individuals to believe in their ability to overcome the bad habit and make positive changes in their lives.

7. Reducing cravings: Hypnosis can be used to decrease the intensity of cravings for addictive substances or behaviours, making it easier for people to resist temptations.

8. Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Hypnotherapy for habits also often involves relaxation techniques, which can help individuals manage stress and anxiety, which are common triggers for bad habits and addictive behaviours.

It’s important to work with a qualified and experienced hypnotherapist like Jane who specializes in habit change to ensure a personalized and effective approach.

Why Hypnotherapy for Habits might work for you

The Wisdom Room takes an integrative therapeutic approach using a combination of  Clinical Hypnotherapy, Talking Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Transformational CoachingGuided Meditation & Mindfulness, and the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to simultaneously retrain both the conscious and unconscious parts of your mind.  It’s important to remember that you weren’t born with this behaviour. It is simply a negative habit or unhealthy trait that you have learned to do as a means to cope. But it is important to realise that anything we can programme in our minds we can learn to de-programme too!

Hypnotherapy is a very natural and yet powerful treatment for overcoming bad habits. The techniques the Wisdom Room uses are fast and effective in helping change unwanted behaviour patterns because they access the deeper (unconscious) level of the mind. We can then create a powerful plan that will help rebuild your emotional strength and create new neural pathways in your mind to lead you on a new path to recovery and happiness.
