What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is a mental health condition that can develop after an individual has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. PTSD is characterized by a range of symptoms that can be debilitating and long-lasting. These symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and intrusive thoughts related to the traumatic event. People with PTSD often experience heightened stress responses and may avoid situations or stimuli that remind them of the trauma.

PTSD can result from various traumatic experiences, such as combat, sexual assault, accidents, natural disasters, or any event that threatens one’s safety or well-being. It can impact a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall mental and emotional health. Treatment options for PTSD typically include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.

PTSD – A normal reaction to abnormal events

Although depression and anxiety disorders often have their origin in past events, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has a unique position as the only anxiety disorder (along with acute stress disorder) that depends on a factor outside the individual, namely, a traumatic event. In addition, it is now recognised that repeated traumas or such traumas over a long duration such as child abuse, domestic violence, stalking, cult membership and hostage situations may also produce the symptoms of PTSD in survivors. It is sometimes summarised as “a normal reaction to abnormal events”.

The process of treating trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is comprehensive and intense. The subconscious mind needs to re-process the past event(s) that cause those terrible feelings and allow them to be desensitised and released allowing the individual to take back control of their life.
